Born in Cornwall in 1781, Henry Martyn came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ while studying Mathematic at Cambridge University. A desire for missionary work took him to India as chaplain to British soldiers. There he began his greatest work for the extension of Christ’s kingdom: the translation of the Christian Scriptures. A desire for missionary work took him to India as chaplain to British soldiers. There he began his greatest work for the extension of Christ’s kingdom: the translation of the Christian Scriptures.

Living in India, sojourning in Persia, and assisted in the task, he produced the New Testament and other parts of the Bible in Hindustani (Urdu) and Persian (Farsi), and support translation work into Arabic.
